Tuzi's Sister-City Mayor Needs Your Support

Rochester Hills Mayor, Bryan K. Barnett is kicking off his re-election campaign on Sunday March 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church and Community Center.

Mayor Barnett's ties with our Community:

- Tuz, Montenegro became our Sister City in March 2007. This relationship has led to many projects, including “Two for Tuz,” where school supplies were collected from residents and shipped to students in Montenegro, thanks to the generous contributions made by St. Paul’s Albanian Catholic Church.

- Rochester Hills hosted the President of Albania, his Excellency Mr. Bamir Topi, on his first-ever visit to Michigan. It was an honor to welcome him to our Albanian community and be a guest at St. Paul’s Albanian Catholic Church.

- During his trip to Tuz in 2008, Barnett gained valuable insight into the way the city operates, it truly was a learning experience. The highlight of the trip was sharing that Rochester College had donated a four-year scholarship. As a result, we have welcomed our first Albanian exchange student, Drita Dushaj.

Please join Mayor Barnett and the Albanian community on March 13th as we plan for a better Rochester Hills coupled with a brighter future for Tuz, Malesia.

Komuniteti Shqiptare i Detroititi, duhet ne menyre masive te tregoj respektin e vet ndaj ketij individe, qe ka be shume per Komunitetin Shqiptar ne Rochester Hills dhe per Malesin.
Sikurse te iaha ne SHBA, do t'ja ipsha kontributin time.

He is an honest, hardworking and a true friend of our community. I you can, please help his campaign! He has political knowledge, experience and ambitions to go far in politics.

Miqasija eshte me rendesi, e jo cilese parti i takon ai. Ne tjetren ane, shqiptaret me duket se jan shumica Republikan!

Krahasimi i Gegoviqit duhet te behen me ata qe vrasin njerz te pafajshem. Nekete rast me shqiptarin terrorist te mykur ne fene mulimane Vehbaiste antishqiptare dhe anti njerzore qe duen ta ckatrrojne shqiptarizmin sepse per ta nu ka komb as popull shqiptar.

I agree, he is a skillful, intelligent and knowledgeable official that has a superb administrative understand of the local government. Tuzi has an ideal opportunity to learn a lot from him!
He is unbeatable here, and he also would easy beat Gegaj in Malesia’s election!
Let’s support him…show up next Sunday, March 13th at St Paul’s at 2PM. See you there!

To understand which local government? Rochester Hills? Yes, agreed, he is doing a fine job here, the constituents love him, but I think that he has no good competition, so he’s had an easy ride so far. As far as Tuzi is concerned, it’s like comparing apples to oranges, you cannot implement these “western ideas” in Tuz at this time; her infrastructure is ill-prepared to support progressive ideas and the thought of democratic transition. I had heard that several years back the mayor and president of Tuzi visited RH for so-called “training” that they supposedly took back with them and would begin reforming Tuzi. I had also heard that nothing came out of it. Why? Because Tuzi’s politicians were and are in it for self-serving rewards, not for the greater good of the makeshift municipality they live and rule on.

Barnett is beatable, but to my earlier point, he has no strong candidate running against him. And to your point, he would LOSE miserably to Gegaj, because Barnett does not have the qualifications of a Balkan demagogue – personal-interests, corruption, bribes, personal favors, money laundering, tax evasion, and on and on. If Barnett can put his “good ol’ boy” image aside and develop these “Balkans qualities,” then maybe he would have a chance at defeating Gegaj.

But what Albanians in RH should be more concerned about, or what questions they should as Barnett at the fundraiser is this: Why don’t you stand up for Tuzi/Malesia when we need you most. Why don’t you request that Podgorica grant Tuzi her own municipality so the sister-city relationship can have more meaning? Why don’t you stand up as an advocate for Tuzi and explain how RH can serve Tuzi more fully if she had her autonomous status as a municipality? Why don’t you petition the current government of Tuzi (Gegaj, et al.) and demand the know their logic behind their refusal to grant Tuzi greater status? This is what a sister-city mayor needs to do. Yea, sure pencils and notebooks are good, so are soccer balls and flags, but what your sister-city really needs is guidance from her big sister in the west to make anything worthwhile to happen.

BArnett signed a sister-city alliance with Tuzi, which means both cities require a functioning municipal structure of government. In Tuzi, there is none. It hangs on the strings of Podgorica. And to make matters worse, the MAyor of Tuzi is the most unpopular elected official of Tuzi (unlike BArnett).

SO if BArnett will bring in the Kamun for Tuzi, then why hasn't he called Gegaj yet? In other words, why doesn't the mayor of Roch Hills communicate with the Mayor of Tuzi? Why? Pse? Zasto?

ANd Drita Dusevic (make sure you all spell her Slavic name correctly), was brought here by the president of Roch Colege, not BArnett. Why hasn't the college accepted another ALbanian student from Tuzi? Is teh program already failing?

NE fund, MAyor Barnett ska ba shit per Malesine!! Malesia is worse off today then when the sister city contract was signed. We have Slavs controlling Tuzi, the same people that Barnett refuses to communicate with.

I agree 110% with the comments above, that the R.H. mayor has been distant from Malesia with respects to having a stance on the poor situation developing there. You would think that Barnnet would at least comment on the urban municipality situation, as to the previous comment, and recommend that Podgorica favorably heir towards the side of giving a full municipality to Malesia. Why not?

I have been following malesia.org, malesiaemadhe.org, and this web page for years, and I have yet to read anything from Barnnet supporting a Malesia municipality. NOTHING!

Why?

Does he not care for Malesia to have the same rights as an American city?

Or has he been silenced by Mugosha too, like the others?

Anonymous said...

Some people just don’t understand the governmental administrative powers, and how these powers are distributed between the local and federal government. The federal governmental agencies (Congress, State Department and Executive branch) can put some political pressure on Pogrorica; whereas, Rochester Hill Municipality, as a local government has no political power or clout to influence Podgorica! Mayor Barnett has been striving to assist Urban Municipality of Tuz with the local issues, offering them training to effectively and efficiently manage their local administrative government, and has also provided other valuable projects for Tuz!

On the other hand, Diaspora needs to continue to lobby our friends in Washington DC at the federal level, through the Congress and the State Department- they have political muscles to put some pressure on stubborn Montenegrin politicians regarding Tuz’s Municipality status.

The Albanian Diaspora has lobbied this issue since 2005 in Washington DC, and it will continue to lobby on behave of Malesia.
Make sure that you show up this Sunday and share your negative and disordered ideas about Mayor Barnett with him! He is ready to answer all your questions!

Mayor Barnett has not only been a friend of St. Paul's Albanian Catholic Church, but also of countless Albanian-owned businesses that fall in his constituency... heck, as he said it himself, some of his closest friends are Albanian. This alone should be reason enough for Malesors to support his campaign.

AT TIMES, (and i stress AT TIMES) our church has been a sore to Rochester Hills, yet, Barnett has continually supported us. There is no doubt that there is a two-way relationship between St. Paul's community and Barnett... scratch our back and we'll scratch yours, or in this case, stick up for our church and the problems it has had, and well line your pocket once November rolls around.

I'm on my soapbox so I'll just continue... his genuine care for our community has even reached out as far as Tuz. Through his hosting of both Cunmulaj and Camaj, a full ride scholarship, the Two for Tuz program, Tuz/Malesi has benefited from Barnett... it bewilders me how some of these earlier posts compare Barnett to these corrupt politicians across Malesi. Barnett is a local mayor in suburban Detroit, he has no influence on American foreign policy, nor does he have sufficient knowledge on the COMPLEXITY of Tuzi politics and its push for municipality status. The politicans of Tuz can't figure their own sh** out and organize a campaign for a legit push for municiplaity status, why the hell should we get Barnett involved?????? Barnett has a full slate to handle as the Mayor of ROchester Hills, I honestly don't think it's fair for us to ask him to get involved in Tuz and Podgorica politics...

Why not line his pockets for the next few elections... Barnett has a bright future ahead of him and who knows, maybe one day he will be in DC and then we can talk abt having him call for Full Municipality status for Tuz. But until then, let's all unite behind our computer screens and message boards to belittle his philanthropic efforts........ sarcasm intended.

Malesors for Barnett!!!

Albanians in Rochstr Hils control Barnnette. That's why he has no communication with the mayor of Tuzi. He is told not to be a true sister city mayor. Extreme minded albaninas in Mich tell Barrnette who to talk to and when. Its a bullshit alliance.

Anonymous said...

After reading all these very interesting blog postings, I can say two things with confidence, 1) the Rochester Hills mayor seems like an innocent local "good-ol'-boy" politician being steered by an Albanian community with their own interests in mind, and 2) Tuzi is a dismal place that doesn'y appreciate help from abroad and seems to have a crisis of self-identity.

I say leave the poor Rochester Hills mayor alone and don't get him caught up in your Balkan politics.

•“Two for Tuz” School supplies delivered to school-children in Malesia
•$ 100.000 awarded to Drita Dushaj, student from Malesia
•Distance learning in progress, if accomplished, it would be the first one of this kind in the Balkan Peninsula. This project would enables high school students in Malesia to learn English Language sufficiently, so young malesort can go to various universities in the USA and England.
•Fire truck- ready to be delivered to Tuz
•Countless appearances and support to our community, especially for the Saint Paul Albanian Church
•As far as his affiliation with the local Albanians, you know all of them-please contact them, and share your thoughts with them! Believe me, they will listen to you!
• FYI-his local associates, also have about 28 congressman and 10 US senator friends!

As sit here and read these silly posts, all I can do is shake my head. I was there yesterday and one thing is certain: Barnett did not raise $10K. Along with other bloated comments found in past Albanian activities, the numbers are overstated. Just like the protests in NY and DC, where around 200-300 people would show up, it would be reported that 1,000 “vibrant and energetic Albanians demanded…” If you want people to take you seriously, please don’t lie.
To the person that posted “Balkan politics v. civic effort.” You put your foot in your mouth. Sources close to the mayor were very disappointed to learn that the fire-truck that was donated to Tuz was never delivered. What was more depressing is that the council of Tuz did not want it, nor did they ask for it. Barnett pulled a lot of strings I am sure to get the donation approved, and at the end, it probably sits on some parking lot turning into rust. Kudos to Barnett, but shameful for you to even post this as an accomplishment. This could fall under your heading “Balkan politics” because Yes, it was Balkan politics that stiffed the mayor here.
“Distance learning in progress?” What distance learning? Aside from the corruption taking place at the 25 May high school, there are teachers working there that do not even know how to use a computer, let along engage in live feeds with American academics. Your optimism exceeds reality. Let the horse pull the carriage, not the other way around.
All the countless appearances are real nice, that’s what politicians do. I also saw Congressman Gary Peters, Wesley Clark, and others appear and support our community too. But with a price of course. They need money and we have money. But I know one thing for sure: the Albanian community of Detroit gave more to Barnett than the other way around. In 2008, when he and his wife and camera-man traveled to Montenegro, Croatia, and Albania, it was on our dollar. And I donated for that too. We basically paid for his entire trip, expenses included, for 10 days of vacation. Sure, it was good exposure for us, but at the end, your “Balkan politics” exploited his visit and turned it into a free-for-all for who can use his name for their own personal gains. I think a previous blogger also made that point. Trust me, it does not cost Barnett much to do what he does for our community. Say a few nice words, etc, etc, etc.

Regarding his “local associates,” I do not see these 30 politicians you refer to. If we were to benefit from his political contacts, then tell me why he did not support the joint statement of Gary Peters, Sander Levin, and Carl Levin in demanding that Montenegro grant more rights to Albanians? HE had more of an incentive to write such a letter than the three DC reps because he is a sister city mayor, who even traveled to Tuz and saw the discrimination first hand. When I read the letter from these DC politicians, I waited and waited for malesia.org or this web page to publish a similar declaration thinking Barnett would also join in a similar letter, but nothing. So again, who are these contacts he has, and are they really contacts concerning our interests, or his?
I know Drita Dusevic’s family, and I know her father really well. I also know her uncle who owns Castellano’s. Let me remind you that she did not need the $100K scholarship Rochester College awarded to her. Her family is ridiculously wealthy, and she could have attended any college in Europe and the States without money being an issue. What is sad is the many Albanian students in Malesia that are very bright but will not be given an opportunity to develop their potential because they are too poor, thus leaving them in Montenegro to pursue an education that is tainted by Slavic bias. I know a dozen Albanians in Malesi that graduated high school the same year as Drita, they were very poor and could not even afford to attend school in their own country, but were looked over for what-ever reason, I don’t know.
So please, don’t think that all these projects you listed are achievements, because they were just as much failures as anything else. But you are right; these are “Balkan politics, and not “civic” by any means.

- Mark

Ju lumte!
